I definitely remember that set, even though I didn't collect basketball cards back then. The original version (with the team hoisting the Larry O'Brien Trophy) was short-printed in update series packs. I don't know how hard they were to pull but it was much, much less than one per box. (In fact, it was possibly the first real "chase card" in the hobby.) Prices quickly shot up to the $50-$60 range, leading many people to complain that they were unable to finish their sets. The "variation" (with the Pistons logo) was subsequently offered as a mail-in promotion to keep their customers happy. It was never issued in packs.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12507501953471537569noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8858926958713988123.post-51771707220061864782019-10-11T13:53:18.889-04:002019-10-11T13:53:18.889-04:00Great write-up, Billy! The Hoops Superstars was a Sears item, at this point it probably wouldn't be too hard to find an old catalog with them in there. And you're completely right about the crazy rare announcers set, you never find those in the wild. I'd love to own a few cards from it, but don't want to pay the online prices for them... which means that I still don't have any!

As an aside, this post made me realize that the Hoops Decade set is twenty years old as well, somehow that makes me feel older than thinking about the original Hoops turning 30.

Jonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13043468725408104535noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8858926958713988123.post-2324504406544656552019-10-11T06:54:10.776-04:002019-10-11T06:54:10.776-04:00This was a great set. I've never really taken the time to give this set the props it deserves. It's so much cooler than the set Fleer released that year.Fujihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00749100861086458307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8858926958713988123.post-58200197263335912512019-10-10T20:33:45.288-04:002019-10-10T20:33:45.288-04:00Hoops was so great the first few years.
