Normally on a Sunday afternoon- now night time (It's 9:38 PM as I type this) I post a Hot off the Scanner Tray post, showing all the cool things that don't fit their own post right now that I've scanned in the past week. But...I didn't scan anything this week. Rare, but it happens. That's a bit of a misnomer. I did do scanning, but it was all stuff for upcoming posts. I have nothing for this week's HOST.
Instead I'm going to highlight my other blogs, two of which I started just yesterday.
I think we all know by now, whoever is reading this, I'm a collector bordering on hoarder. I collect lots of things...even if I do go years without adding to certain collections.
Cards are #1, and that's why this was not only my first blog, but my most active. I've been doing this since November 2014, and I've posted over 100 blog posts, and have more than 30 in queue to post eventually, all part of the Sets in my Collection series. (#11 is the most recent posted, up to and including #34 is done and ready to go)
But cards are not my only hobby. I have been a collector of things for my whole life, and the subjects of my two new blogs actually both pre-date my involvement with cards, which began in 1988. I began both of the the other collections circa 1985, when I was a year old. (don't know exactly when for either, but Christmas 1985 seems like the most likely time)
Action Figure History covers the only main collection I've actually dropped, being essentially retired since 2007, although I have picked up a few different Star Wars figures over the years since then. I collected three main lines - Star Wars, DC Comics, GI Joe - and more than a half dozen others to a lesser extent. This new blog will highlight my photography of that collection, with the idea eventually to give each figure it's own post. I have not even hit halfway in the photography portion yet, so it will be a while for sure before I run out of things to post.
For a very long time, 1/64 diecast was my main hobby, with cards actually #2, although that has not been the case for a long while. Although I started with street cars, I eventually moved to NASCAR only, and built a very large collection- over 5000 unique cars. Since I nearly died in 2013, I had to cut back drastically, in fact I even thought I was done for a while- but I couldn't let it go. It was too painful to pass up the cars when I saw them.
I can't collect like I once did, but I still have my collection. The good thing is that the collection is entirely photographed. Unlike my cards, which I am working on scanning, and my action figures, only partially photographed, the diecast collection is photographed in full.
So, all that led to the launch of Die Cast History
My second blog was Scale Modeling History which is about the scale models I've built. I'm not particularly good at building, but I keep trying. I began building models in 1999, and did automotive only until I joined the Hudson Valley Historical Miniatures Guild, my local IPMS chapter. I got an airplane in the club Christmas exchange my first year, and I loved it! Now I've built planes, armor, figures, whatever interests me. I've discovered I really enjoy learning about aircraft in particular, and even subscribed to Aviation Magazine, all because of the club.
I don't really talk about it too much, but since 2008 I've made an attempt at coin collecting...but I'm not a very good collector. I refuse to spend more than $20 on a single item, and that leaves me pretty limited options. One thing I have worked on, and most of my blog posts are about, is my One from Every Country collection. (Are you noticing a theme, with my goal to have every person to get an NBA or NASCAR card, and every set, into my collection?) The majority of my collection is US coinage I've pulled from circulation...the only set I've completed is the state quarters of 1999-2009. Not a very hard set to complete. Numismatic History
And those are my other blogs. I'm considering starting 1 or 2 more. I also collect stamps, although I have not bought one for my collection since somewhere around 2012, and there is one hobby that has been with me longer than any other....comic books. I had my first comic read to me at 5 days old and I've never stopped. I've done some comic posts on Cardboard History before as well. I'm not sure if anybody would read them, I can barely get people to read my card posts. But, I do this for myself. For Cardboard History, I have lots of topics and themes I want to talk about, and the others are mostly used as a photo storage with a little more security than the website I've been using since 2004. Google has little chance of just disappearing one day and I'm not so sure that is true with Fotki. Hopefully by posting this here I'll get a few more readers, but if not...that's OK too. It's not going to stop me from creating posts. I can't do a whole lot physically due to health issues so I write blog posts.
I think we all have at least another hobby. At least I do. But it's an on and off one which leads to those Reminiscing 90's posts. I will def give these a check out.
ReplyDeleteI think so. Some people either have the collecting bug, or don't understand it...I definitely have it!
DeleteThose are some cool hobbies. I don't really stray too far from the sports world. Craft beer is a passion, but not really a hobby.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I've never been an alcohol fan myself, but several (most) of my friends could be described as enthusiasts (lol)
DeleteYou are a busy guy my friend
ReplyDeleteYep, I've got to do something to keep from going crazy (hah!)
DeleteYou should be getting a box in the next day or two as well. Me being me, it took me a while to get it ready.
Received it yesterday. Thanks. I sent you an email
