I don't know the cause, and I'm sure there's no fix to it, but it's really disappointing to look through old Finests and early Topps Chromes and see them turning green. Just a small sampling.
This Anthony Mason card is starting to turn. I'm glad I got it scanned now, because I don't know how much time it has left before turning green.
While working on these scans, I also discovered I have a card from this set with a bug squashed between the card and the protective peel. Eew! I don't normally have a problem with flying bugs, but this creeped me out for some reason. I posted a scan on the Trading Card Database if you want to see it. I don't intend to post it here.
A bug imprint on a card would gross me out too, but I am kind of curious to see it. I noticed my 90s Finest/chrome cards turning greenish yellow a couple years ago and freaked out. had a near-set of 1995-96 Finest that I sold because I was worried they'd all turn. At the time I tried to do some research on why the cards discolor over time, but couldnt find any answers. If you find out, let us know.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen it affect 1995-96 yet, but I would not be surprised if it does eventually.
DeleteI typed my comment out so fast I didn't specify which '95-96 Finest set...I should have said hockey.
DeleteOh dang, is this a common problem with them all or only on certain ones? The bug one was pretty cool.
ReplyDeletePretty common on 1994-95, even worse on 1993-94. Have not seen on 1995-96 or 1996-97, but I have seen it on 1996-97 Topps Chrome and 1997-98 Finest.
DeleteA. I'm scared to go look at my 90's Finest cards. Hate to see they're all turning green.
ReplyDeleteB. That bug card is fantastic! I want one for my PC.
If I can find a bug free example I'll gladly send you this one!
DeleteThis is why I don't collect the early of these sets, as I find the greening to be absolutely hideous! By the by, the consensus seems to be that the greening is caused by heat and humidity, it causes one of the chemicals that was used in the printing process to go askew... at least this what I've read.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It's not cool. I would not be surprised if what you read is true. I didn't have air conditioning until 2000 but most of the cards I got new have not turned. A few have.
DeleteI noticed them starting to turn green back in the mid-1990s, when some of them were only a couple years old. Happens with both Finest and Chrome. Didn't matter whether the cards were in sunlight, in boxes in darkness, loose or in sleeves and/or toploaders. It looks like they fixed the problem after a few years, as I haven't seen it on issues from the late-1990s on. It's kind of funny having a Graded 10 card that's gone green :) Or maybe not so funny...
ReplyDeleteYea, I have a Kobe topps chrome #171 that has the green look to it.Wonder if it's still worth a few bucks.
