My First Hockey Repack

Today I watched my first NHL All-Star Game, or most of it at least, as I slept through the first of the three game tournament. Now I have the AHL All-Star Skills competition on. Sounds like a good day to look at some hockey cards. 

Last week I finally got to Target and was able to pick up some current season hockey cards. I nabbed a blaster of 2016-17 Upper Deck Series 1 some random loose packs, and a 100 card Fairfield repack. Since I gave the blaster it's own post, and I have not opened the random packs yet, since I need to scan them first, I thought I would post some highlights of the repack.

Funny story about the picture- I forgot to take a photo before I opened it, so I filled it with the cards I had on hand so it would look about right. The box now has hockey, NASCAR and basketball cards in it...and one 1988 Topps baseball card which I had on hand for some reason. I made sure to make the top card the actual top card at least.

I got 80 new NHL cards, 10 new minor league cards and 1 new Multi-sport card. I added 19 new people to my collection and I added the following sets to my collection:

1. 1991-92 7th Inning Sketch QMJHL
2. 1991-92 7th Inning Sketch WHL
3. 1995 Classic
4. 1995-96 Emotion
5. 2002-03 Be A Player First Edition (card was damaged by sticking to another card on both sides)
6. 2007-08 Ovation
7. 2010-11 Score
8. 2011-12 O-Pee-Chee (also the newest card in the repack)
9. 2011-12 Upper Deck

I also got a pack of 2012-13 Score which needs to be scanned before I open it.  I also got 9 duplicates, but some of them are probably upgrades.
The oldest cards were 2 1989-90 Topps and one 1989-90 O-Pee-Chee (which was one of the duplicates) and the two sets listed from 2011-12 were the newest cards in the repack.
Most of the cards in the pack were from 1990-91 through 1994-95, and I'm sure that most repacks have similar contents. Only one of the cards was not already posted to the Trading Card Database.

Now, since there were a lot of new cards, it would take me a long time to get them all scanned and posted, and I have a lot of things I want to scan and post, so I am just going to pick some highlights to scan that I want to specifically mention or just like the photo. By the way, 91 new cards is the most I've gotten from a repack in years...over a decade. I've been collecting the NBA for so long that if I get more than 5 new cards out of a repack then I consider it a win. It'll probably take me a while before I get to that point in the NHL, but I am sure eventually the repacks will give me more duplicates than new, considering mostly the repacks are all early 1990s. While that is my favorite time in cards, there's only so many made and eventually you get most of them.

1995-96 Emotion...so much to say about this card. First, slap is not an emotion! Second, this is not my first card showing the angry Gorton's Fisherman, but it shows him best. Thirdly, this threw me because it uses the exact same design and concept as the 1994-95 NBA Emotion set...being issued for the later season threw me off at first, but luckily it includes a stat line on the back for 1994-95.

If the North Stars still existed, and still wore these uniforms, they would probably be the team I chose to root for, as green is my long-time favorite color, and yellow has become my second favorite. I know the team still exists as the Dallas Stars, but it's not the same, and in all three games I've seen of them they seemed to play the...I don't want to go so far as to say dirtiest, but I can't think of a better synonym. Coming from more than 20 years of watching the NBA what is considered dirty there is not even a penalty in some cases here.

I didn't realize the Young Guns subset has run as long as it has, this is now my oldest.

It's nice to get a 1990-91 O-Pee-Chee card without red spots on it. I've been advised they may be mold spots, I hope not. I've sequestered them in a sealed team bag just in case.

This card is one of the more visually interesting of the pack. It's got a high degree of embossing to it, radiating out from the center. You can actually see it a little bit on the right side especially.

I've shown the Chris Gratton card from this subset before. I really like it. Bonus points for being a Senators card. I have not seen them play yet, but I've been saying for quite some time that they have my favorite team logo in all of sports. Being a big fan of ancient Rome that should not be a surprise.

This was the only insert in the entire repack. I found it unusual that the insert was not glossy while the base cards are.

This was the only card that was not already on the Database. There are a lot of hockey collectors on there...not as many as baseball, but that shouldn't be too surprising if you've been reading card blogs for a while.

The very last card in the box...there are Conklins in the family tree. Don't think he's related but on the off chance he is, I decided to scan it. I never imagined I would be distant cousins to Kevin Love so you never know.

I think this is my favorite photo in the whole repack. I know it's posed, but it's just so darn cool. And it displays the Senators logo prominently.

This can't be right...a professional card in a Classic set? That's not something you see very often.

A minor league card. I am counting these are part of my collection but I am not sure if I should or not. I count the NBA's D-League cards as part of my NBA collection, I even counted the ARCA cards in my NASCAR collection just because they were close enough, so there is a precedent. I think these fall more into the ARCA category than the D-League, which is owned by the NBA, and not it's own separate organization, like ARCA is to NASCAR. I don't have enough knowledge of hockey yet to know if these should count, or should be banished to their own separate count like college basketball cards.
I digress. Why this one matters: He's a one hit wonder, this is the only card he ever got, according to the Trading Card Database. (there are some minor league sets still awaiting checklists) He becomes the first hockey player in my collection that I'm aware of who is a One Hit Wonder. He may not be the actual first- but he's the first one I'm aware of and that was enough to give him a scan.
