I have taken to watching TV with the closed captioning in...it helps you pick up things you otherwise miss, it lets you actually follow what it is going on on tv in the middle of the night...and it makes you laugh hysterically when they blunder somebody's name.
For example, during the 2021 Daytona Busch race, they called him "Really Hurts"
(if the foil name is too hard to read, his name is Riley Herbst. She doesn't have a card but they called Gracie Trotter "Greasy Trotter"!
When Darrell Wallace Jr., known as Bubba, blew an engine at Pocono a few years ago, they called him Bubble Wallace, then they said he had "injun trouble"...that's all kinds of wrong.
But the funniest blunders are all in hockey, where Valtteri Filppula became Valterri Fibula...
Calle Jarnkrok became "Old Iron Hook",
Dylan Larkin became "Large Can" !
Max Pacioretty became "Max Patch Already"
and even the Superstars aren't immune, as Connor McDavid was labeled as "Condor McDavid"!
and even the Superstars aren't immune, as Connor McDavid was labeled as "Condor McDavid"!
The guys named Roy, which is pronounced Wa? That confuses the system completely, they don't list ANYTHING at all!
One of my favorites was when Joel Farabee became "Jewel Therapy"!
Yet, amazingly, they've never blundered Giannis Antetokounmpo. I still haven't figured out how they've managed to get that right, yet.
And it's not just people. My mom reports that on an episode of Perry Mason, they mention that someone was driving a "pink thundered bird"!
Today is my Mom's birthday. Happy Birthday Mom! thanks for everything!
This post made me laugh out loud. Their captioning mistakes are hilarious, and the best part is we know there will be more to come in the future.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the birthday wishes. ♥️
Great stuff! "Large Can"--eep!
ReplyDeleteThe last one reminds me of a similar mistake, but not in closed captioning. When they show the Little League World Series on TV, they don't have a lot of stats and information about the kids the way they would about pros, so they often list their favorite something-or-other. One year, they listed a Japanese player's favorite wrestler as "Thunder Rider". I was a pretty big wrestling fan, and I had never heard of him. Then I realized that undoubtedly the kid had actually named as his favorite wrestler the great Jushin "Thunder" Liger.
I go to battle with my friend who I share my Netflix account with. She HATES that I use CC all of the time... but I like it. She turns it off. I turn it on. Back and forth battle. Anyways... I'm surprised at how accurate their CC is. However... I've seen a ton of errors with YouTube's CC.
ReplyDeleteThat was really funny!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post! So funny.
ReplyDeleteReminds me a bit of the crazy things that my Garmin says.
ReplyDeleteThese are great. Dennis (Too Many Verlanders) mentioned that Nik Stauskas got his nickname "Sauce Castillo" from closed captioning.
ReplyDeleteGlad you all enjoyed! I will post updates periodically...
ReplyDeleteThunder Rider would be an awesome name for a motorcycle themed wrestler.
Knew about Stauskas but totally forgot. He even marketed a hot sauce based on that.
My photo tried to auto-correct Alex Ovechkin to Oven Chin, and Binnington to Bunnies.
Too funny.
