Top 12 Cards of 2019

I like to finish each year with a countdown of my top 12 cards of that year- one from each month. This year I was mostly on burnout mode because of my Card of the Day project in 2018, basically just going through the motions until about mid-November, when my passion returned (as I'm sure you've been able to tell by how much I've been posting since then) I have even less preconceived plans about what will "win" each month this year than I have in the past couple of years, so this should be fun for me to compose, hopefully for you to read, as well.

January:
2017 Absolute Racing Tools of the Trade Dual Gold

It's hard to argue against a dual relic SN to ten that I pulled from a pack myself, which is not something I do very often! Couple that with the fact that it's got two colors on the sheet metal piece and parts of the Goodyear lettering on the tire, I just can't beat that! 2017 Absolute was also the only hobby box I bought for myself during the entire year...although not the only one I did. I got three for Christmas as well. That's it though, the least I've done in a year since 2008 when I did none.

February:
2015-16 Ultimate Collection Jumbo Materials Patch

I attended my first card show since either 2004 or 2005 in February, that was a thrill for me! This is the marquee card I got, and I actually got two from this same insert set. I had hoped to attend the card shows at least two times a year but it just didn't turn out that way for me, attending each one only once. But the fact that I got to go to two is just so amazing to me, I hope to get back to at least one in 2020.

March:
Hitting 2017 Absolute Racing again, but this time from the Plainville CT card show, not the box. This has a piece of neon yellow sheet metal, and having grown up in the 1990s, there are two things that will ALWAYS catch my eye- holograms and neon. This is my first piece of neon sheet metal, although not my last, as I purchased three pieces from the same seller at the show all at once. As you can tell from the photo, Menard is ecstatic.

April:
Here's a card I got from another blogger, this one coming from Chris of the Collector. It completed my Starting 5 promo set for that year, which is quite an accomplishment because I wasn't collecting NBA at that time, and promos are notoriously hard to find after the fact.

May:
I'd like to show you the favorite card I got in May, which is a Henrik Lundqvist card I got in trade from Kenny/Zippy Zappy. But, I lost the box I put it in and the other cards he traded me, as well as the rest of the Beach Boys box I finally finished opening, so I can't. I've gone nuts looking for them, because I didn't even get a chance to list them in my paper listing yet. Very frustrating, and a sign of how much I was just going through the motions in those months.
What I CAN show is one of his trademark pretty girls he's known for sending. Somehow, I managed not to lose them.
2013 Seven Colors #62

I have no idea who this lady is, I think possibly a musician, but she has a lot of cards issued. Unfortunately, I can't find full checklists so I can't post them on the Database, making them and the Sumo cards Ryan sent me a while back the only part of my collection not properly documented.

June:
2018-19 Panini Threads Dazzle Gold #86

I never pull cards SN to 10 or less...I did it twice in 2019! My brother bought me some cards when we took a one-day-up-and-back trip to Lake George, and I happened to pull this Russell Westbrook card SN 01/10! And it's really cool looking in person, much nicer than it does in scans.

July:
1966 Batman Black Bat #51

I was able to add three 1966 Batman cards in 2019, bringing my total to 4. I need more of them, but they are quite hard for me to find! The Black Bat set was new to me in 2019. I still lack the Blue Bat set totally.

August:
2000-01 Stadium Club #236

August was probably my worst month in the hobby since 2008. I didn't scan even a single card during the entire month, the first time that has happened that I can recall. The one and only highlight of the month is that Ryan / SumoMenkoMan sent me a box of stuff totally at random, and I really like the design of the 2000-01 Stadium Club hockey set- this is only my second or third card from the set- so it got the nod.

September:
2011-12 SP Game Used Authentic Fabrics Patch

I think we all knew that this was going to be the card. I passed this card by last time I went to the shop it was for sale in in 2017. I didn't get there at all in 2018, and I assumed it would be sold...lost to me forever. When I got back there on September 3rd, it was still there, so I made sure that I would not leave without it- even if it's the most I've paid for a hockey card to date. (tied) This is probably my favorite card of the entire year, to be honest. I can't tell you how many times I had thought about and regretted leaving it behind.

October:
1887 Allen & Ginter Arms of All Nations

I got a lot of REALLY great cards in October. For new cards, it was one of the best months of the year. Getting my oldest card, a full 131 years old, that can't be topped so it gets the nod.

November:
1972-73 Topps #87

In November, I found out I was losing my favorite place for vintage cards, where I've gotten all sorts of great oddballs and hockey since 2014, due to the owner pulling the lease to put in "upscale coffee shops". Well, I went and got as much as I could afford, which was a lot of Rangers cards, and a partial set of 1972-73 Topps, which I suspect was complete at one point, but had gotten picked over over the years. I chose this card, instead of the many Rangers I got, because it has such a cool, unique photo on it. (and it does have a bit of a Rangers tie in- the photo was taken at Madison Square Garden.) This is a really unusual and creative photo for 1972-73...about 95% of the set are posed photos, not even action photos, which makes this stand out even more.

December:
2019-20 Upper Deck UD Exclusives #86

Although I got a lot of great cards in December, including my COMC order that had been building since August of 2018, a card I pulled had to get the top spot. I have been a fan of the UD Exclusives parallel since it was introduced in 1998-99 for the NBA, and as I would come to find out, the NHL as well...although it would be years until I learned about that sport, which has now taken firm control of the #1 spot in my collection...not in card totals but in interest. The UD Exclusives are always SN, usually to 100, although some sets to 500. They are not common pulls, and since I began collecting the NHL, this is only the second one that I've pulled from a pack, following one from 2010-11, which I pulled from a single pack I found somewhere. In the grand scheme of things, these are my third-favorite parallel concept, but are de-facto #1 since the first two are no longer issued in my sports, or at all. (Refractors, which sort of live on in Prizms from Panini for NBA and NASCAR, but not quite, and Ultra Gold Medallions). The fact that I pulled a Ranger, a player from my team, makes it so much more special. I pulled this on Christmas day, and I got the base version as well. My brother's Christmas Present to me was $100 on COMC, and a good portion of that was spent on other UD Exclusives issues, including a full page from the 2017-18 set...I'll post about them when they arrive, and my recap of the cards I actually got on Christmas will be coming soon...hopefully by this weekend....but next year, nonetheless!

I ended 2019 on a high note, Cardboard History wise, and 2020 is going to be starting out much the same way, as I have almost 30 posts in the queue waiting for their time in the sun...

Thanks for another great year of reading!

A major milestone

I'll start off by saying that my numbers are surely not accurate...I keep them in multiple places and not a single one matches. But I have a working number that I go off of and even though I'm sure it's not right, it's probably as close as I can ever get. I treat it as if it was correct.

Last night, I hit a major milestone with my collection....I hit 150,000 different cards. That's a grand total of all sports and non-sports...everything. I began collecting in 1988 and have never truly stopped, although 2007 and 2008 were pretty lean years, I got documented new cards in both of them. (Documented meaning I listed them with a date in my paper listing).

I didn't actually have a working total number until January of this year, when I finished listing and counting the cards that came with 1/64 diecast cars. I know I have others, but no idea where. I hope to find them some day. But I counted what I had, and it was the last section of my collection that did not have even a rudimentary count. I'm running with it as a grand total even though I don't think I ever counted the oversize cards, or even the 1996-97 Collector's Choice mini-cards...which I did separate.

After the package from Adam I showed in my last post I was 8 cards away, and a trip to Target yielded some packs...
this is card #150,000.
I hadn't opened any 2016-17 Complete since Christmas, when I got a blaster. For a set I really like I have not chased it as much as I normally would. At 400 cards this year it's still 50 players away from being actually complete, but it's the largest crop of players Panini has ever given us.

I also picked up two packs of 2015-16 Excalibur and one each of 2016-17 Threads and Prestige, and some hockey packs- 2014-15 O-Pee-Chee Platinum, 2015-16 UD Series 2 and 2016-17 MVP and Artifacts, which I thought at the time was the first pack I'd ever opened of the set, but I was wrong, it was my second. I now sit at 150,031 cards...and the number will always keep going up, as I don't plan to ever stop collecting for as long as I live.

Since I've got this Westbrook card posted, I will say also that I'm thrilled he won MVP this season. He earned it with one of the most amazing performances in NBA history, averaging a Triple Double for the entire season, something only ever done once before in the NBA's 70 years. The amazing thing is that if they don't bring in some help this off season, he might be doing it again next year, too!

I would not have hit this milestone without the help of my fellow collectors. I've added literally thousands of cards as gifts from fellow bloggers/collectors just in the last 12 months alone, and I treasure every one of them. Thank you to everyone who has ever sent me a card.

Executive Decision

I've decided that I am going to integrate my stickers and "other" cards into my NBA collection. Back in August I put up a post wondering about it, and got very little turnout to it. But, to answer the question Angus of Dawg Day Cards posted in the comments, yes, there are players who have stickers but no actual cards. At least one that I am aware of, JaMychal Green of the Memphis Grizzlies. Despite the fact that he is a starter on a playoff team Panini has not included him on any actual cards. There are other players which have only "super premium" cards, but have stickers, like Joffrey Lauverne. Finding the sticker would be much easier than a single card out of a $300 pack.

I made this decision because I purchased ten packs of the new 2016-17 Panini Stickers set, and opened up only a handful of them. I realized they really are Panini's flagship, not only do they include a lot of players, they include actual documentation of the previous season- what a trading card should be.

Here's a couple of examples.

A subset honoring the Christmas Day jerseys/games, the All-Stars, and the NBA Playoffs. This is stuff that is not covered on the actual cards.

The team cards return in two forms this year.

The basic team logo is not mirror foil- a big plus! and the jerseys are a nice touch even if they are generic numbers and not a specific player- although I don't mind that, because now I can consider them a team card without a second thought. (16 and 17 are actually fairly rare numbers to see worn, 15 and lower and 20s-34 are the most common...the topic of another post I've had in my head since before I began Cardboard History, but need to do more scanning before I can begin it.)

Here's a basic player sticker:
Not bad. Nice clear photo, an easily read name, and the team logo is in full color and not too distracting. No pointless stuff on the front like in some other years.

Two things I don't like- they are small. Smaller than the Bazooka Minis, but larger than tobacco sized cards. A unique size. And they are flimsy. The mirror foil stickers, which are seeded one per pack but are part of the base set, curl up badly because they are so flimsy.

As for the backs of the cards not having any information...eh, so what? That mattered to me in the 1990s, it matters less to me now, when I realize documenting the game is more important than anything else. Now I've got cards in my collection that have blank backs...I probably did in the 1990s too but I don't remember. My lines of thought are not always recognizable even to me. The fact that Panini doesn't bother to include stats on actual cards has made them missing from the stickers less of an issue as well.

I've also decided to include the two Adrenalyn XL sets. I resisted these because they were a card game. But when Angus (again! 😃 ) asked me why I didn't include these in my collection, the answer was...I just didn't. That's not a really good reason, so I've decided to include them...even though they are game cards and not actually trading cards. Close enough. If I can include coins, poker chips, disks that may or may not have been ice cream lids, and more, why shouldn't I include stickers and game cards? The answer, of course, is that I should.

As an added bonus, I actually have a player from one of the Adrenalyn XL sets who is currently listed as being missing from my collection, and I've already got both years represented in my collection....although I know there is a version printed in Italian that I don't have represented....and that leads me to my last big hurdle....the International cards. I've referenced these several times before...Upper Deck produced versions in up to 6 languages in one year, Fleer also issued a European set, and Panini has issued sets for Europe and China as well, not all of which appear in my collection.
But I have a 550 count box of them that's pretty full and they are currently counted as a separate collection.

I think it's only a matter of time until I integrate them into my NBA collection. I just have to find them first. As they have not counted as officially part of my collection I didn't keep good track of them and while I do have them fully documented on the Trading Card Database I don't have an actual count or a paper listing.

But I think I will be doing that when I find them...just because they are different doesn't mean I should not consider them part of my collection, after all.

With this move, I now add 128 stickers and 21 Adrenalyn XL cards to my collection. Not too bad to up my collection total by 149 without having to actually do anything, hah!

Here's an example of the 2009-10 Adrenalyn XL set

Hot off the Scanner Tray "week" 12

It's been a while since I've posted one of these. First, I went offline while I was waiting to see the Force Awakens. Then, I was working solely on the cards I got for Christmas not one but two weeks in a row, which I couldn't really post in a HOST because they were getting a post dedicated solely to them. I also took some time off for scanning to do some typing, as related in my Goals for 2016 post.

Ironically, this first one is a redemption I received from Panini, and it's likely going to get posted before I post the box break the redemption card came from! (I took advantage of the Dave & Adam's Black Friday sales this past year for the first time). The redemption had expired over a year ago, but Panini still honored it. While my relationship with Panini has been somewhat adversarial at times, this is nothing but admiration (of their handling of redemption cards) I've been in this hobby for 28 years now, and this is something Panini has done better than anyone else in that time.
Thanks to this card, I now have the autographs of 4 of the Warriors starters. I am only missing Andrew Bogut. I also have Festus Ezeli's autograph as well. The Warriors are my current favorite team to watch...although now that Elton Brand is out of retirement I will probably not get to see them as much.

I nabbed this one on Ebay. Hilton Armstrong is a hometown hero, from Peekskill, NY. While Peekskill is not my hometown, my family has been there since the 1600s, in fact they helped found the town. He's not in the League anymore, but he was for several years. I didn't know he was from Peekskill until last year, however. This is only my 4th card of him, and that's counting a college card, which I normally don't do. The card has a pretty nasty bend in it, with multiple creases, which I didn't notice until it arrived. It was clearly visible in the ebay photo, so that's my fault for not paying enough attention. The card cost me less than $2 so I can't really complain. And not only that...

...the seller of the Hilton Armstrong card included 4 bonus cards. They are all football, all from the same set. I never turn down free cards no matter what the subject is! I've actually heard of both of these guys, which is not too common for me with football. (Who HASN'T seen Odell Beckham Jr.'s famous catch?) I just read an article about Cam Newton in Sports Illustrated recently, as well. He's also shown up courtside at several NBA games this season also.

I bought a blaster box of Hoops in the hopes that I'd be able to complete the base set. I am not doing well in that regard...I am still 20 cards short, about half of them rookies, which fall 1 per pack. I am still missing the big names, as well- no Porzingis, Towns, Russell, or others yet. I have gotten some more of the inserts and a couple of parallels, and I have gotten some of the cards I didn't get with my box, so it was not a waste of money....and I have not finished opening it yet. I will have to check and see if my local Target has put out a Knicks team set. I know they have been issued, but they did not stock the 2014-15 team set...possibly because a 2012-13 one still occasionally comes out of the stock room. I do want that Porzingis card.
After I finished typing up all my relic/autograph/SN cards, as related in my last post, I finished filling up the plastic cases and typed a round into my Excel chart. After I fill each of the 42 plastic cases, I sort them by person and then type them into my Excel chart. It normally takes me about a week to do this and this time was slowed by a health problem that caused me an immense amount of paint for several days.
Here are the cases all filled. One thing that I like about the cases- and why I photograph them every time- is seeing the edges of the cards. Here, you can see a batch of 2014-15 Donruss (third case from the left, third row down) and the box of 2015-16 Hoops my mom gave me for my birthday- and ended up being the set I got the most cards from in all of 2015- in the 3rd, 4th and 5th caes in the next to last row.
Another view. I began filling the cases on 9/28/15.
Sorted by first letter of last name. I then sorted each letter by person, and then typed them into Excel, but I didn't photograph any of that.
The cases now empty, waiting to be filled again. In this batch I did exactly 5400 cards, although the number is slightly inflated because I also got out the oversized cards and the cards trapped in the plastic cases Topps favored from 2001-02 through at least 2005-06. It generally takes me a long time to fill the cases- since I started keeping track of when I finished each batch of cases, I've never done more than two in one year. However, I only started keeping track in 2013.

Furthermore, the next batch I do will put me at halfway in scanning my NBA collection. Halfway is 41,281 cards. I have scanned and entered 39,530 right now, and each completed round of cases is always at least 5000 cards, so I will hit it at some point soon...probably by the time of the Daytona 500 but I won't have any way to know when or which card it is. And, of course, each new NBA card I get changes the number that is halfway.

There won't be any HOST for a couple of weeks....I will be starting a very special project this week that will preclude posting it.

Box Break Review: 2015-16 Hoops

The new NBA season is here, as the first card release has hit and my mom gave me a box of it as a late birthday present- really made me happy! Originally it was scheduled to come out on the 14th, but they pushed it back to the 21st. She got the box to me on the 22nd.

I really like the Hoops brand- it's always my favorite set of the season, mostly due to the fact that it includes the most players, although it still ignores at least 100. For some reason Panini refuses to make any sets larger than 300 cards. This is my only real complaint about the set, which otherwise is perfect.

The design this year is nice, it features a white border but not the traditional border shape. It sure makes it easy to scan them, which I like- I scanned my entire box in 3 days worth of effort. (I wanted to get it fully scanned before I posted about it). A couple of oddities about the set- a large portion of the cards were taken with the Cavaliers as the opponent. I didn't do any math on it, and indeed I don't have all the cards, but it seems like about 1/3rd of them have the Cavs in the background. Another thing to note, not necessarily an oddity, is that a lot of images are taken looking up at the players- clearly from the photographers you see sitting along the baseline at every game. That isn't a bad thing although it does give some unexpected angles- and some interesting shots of the arena you don't see too often, which I will show below. Photography as a whole is excellent.

Parallels are much harder to get this year, which is a shame as they look better than ever. I got only 1 Green, 3 Gold, 4 Red Back, 2 Silver and 1 Artist Proof. The Green and Gold are my favorites, the Red Back is kind of pointless- I would really rather they got rid of them and gave us more Gold and/or Green. Blue and Red are retail exclusive, and Black are 1/1 so I did not get any of those.

They are packed 13 cards per pack, but marked 12 as they apparently don't count the one-per-pack Panini Dunk info card. They were the only duplicates to be found in the entire box, which is a nice thing. Panini doesn't really have a good track record of not giving you multiple duplicates in a box but this is the second year in a row for Hoops where that was the case. In each pack you get one Rookie and one non-base card, which is either a parallel or an insert.

I know I always go on about base cards, and how great they are, and how I don't chase hits...but I pulled a really great hit from this box and I think I will lead off with that one. It's the best "hit" I've had in the NBA since 2003 when I pulled Kobe Bryant's autograph...

You get two autographs in each hobby box of Hoops on average. Relics appear to be retail exclusive.
My first autograph out of the box...was this one!
This is a card I could not afford to buy as a single had I not pulled it! Wiggins is considered the best talent to come into the NBA since LeBron James, and he is the defending Rookie of the Year (Not that you can really win that again). The T-Wolves have a bright future with him, Karl-Anthony Towns (who, despite being on the packaging, I did not get a single card of) and others, although it's expected that they will not do all that well in 2015-16, a couple of years down the road, they are expected to be contenders. I was pretty shocked when I got this one- autographs come out of the packs backwards, and when I realized it was an autograph, I closed my eyes so I wouldn't see who it was until I turned it over- and what I shock I got! My other autograph came out of the very last pack I opened- and it was the first card I have of Branden Dawson, a rookie of the Clippers, who did not get a card in the base set. He is one of several rookies who are included in the autograph checklists but not in the base set.

Now, here's a look at some base cards.
#244, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, was the first card out of the box. It's the only one I noticed that the photo is slightly blurry on- an issue Panini has had sometimes- this year's set is an improvement.

#4- Langston Galloway. He joined the Knicks on a 10-day contract last season and ended up earning a starting spot before the end of the 10-day contract, something I can't recall ever happening before. This is my first card of him.

#88 Sideshow Bob, I mean, Robin Lopez. Seriously, he's got a Sideshow Bob thing going on here. Am I right?
2003 Artbox Simpsons Film Cardz #12
(Note-I am a fan of both Lopez brothers in the NBA)

#233 Wesley Johnson. The new Clippers uniform makes it's debut. The home jersey, shown, is not bad, but the road jersey is the worst in NBA history.

#148 Russell Westbrook. Some of the photography in this set is really from interesting angles, like this one. This is probably my favorite Westbrook card in my collection now.

#16 Mike Muscala. His third year in the NBA, but my first card of him.

I don't think the Celtics are Panini's favorite team- three of their projected starters for 2015-16 are not in the set. (Jae Crowder, Kelly Olynyk, David Lee- although Lee and Olynyk are in some of the inserts, with Lee's inclusion as part of the Championship subset of Road to the Finals only)

#204- Dellavedova played his way into the card set during the finals for sure, after Kyrie Irving went down with a broken knee. He was not included in 2014-15 sets.
Couldn't beat this guy though, who, with Elton Brand's retirement, is now my favorite player in the League. (Card #248)

I think my favorite card from the base set, though, is this one- a fairly obscure player, it is only my 2nd card of him-
#252, Lance Thomas. What a cool shot that is. Framed with him perfectly centered, with the rim at the top and the scoreboard above his head. The banners hanging in the background, perfect! (As an aside, Optimum, which owns the Knicks franchise/MSG, is the company we use for our internet- the logo is fully shown on Cleanthony Early's card, which I like- seeing the ads in the background is fun for me, especially on older cards- which, someday, this will be- reminding me of times past...and isn't that why we collect?)

The rookies this year, in Panini's 5th with the Hoops brand, are done using a different design, which is a first. (Although Panini didn't bother to include any rookies in the lockout shortened 2011-12 so it's only the 4th year of them)

I always enjoy getting the first rookie cards of the year, but with them one-per pack this year I am missing more rookies than veterans by a wide margin. I'm hoping an upcoming retail blaster box purchase will get me the rest of them, but I know it won't- I have not completed any of the Hoops sets in the Panini era yet. Anyway...
#299 Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, my first rookie of the season. How cool that it is a player for my long-time favorite team?

#294 Emmanuel Mudiay. I expect he will be Rookie of the Year this year, although there are several that have a real good shot.

Like this guy, Jahlil Okafor, card #280. Note that both the Nuggets and the 76ers have new jerseys this season, making their card debut on the rookies. Also with new jerseys this year are the Clippers, as previously noted, the Hawks, Bucks, and I think I'm forgetting one or maybe even two.

#291 Larry Nance Jr. &
#287 Jerian Grant are the only two second-generation players I'm aware of in this year's rookie class, although there is a chance that I don't know on some common names- there are multiple players with the last names of Jackson, Johnson, Martin, Russell, Anderson and Brown - all of which appear in this year's rookie class, so there may be more second generation players I am not yet aware of. Grant is the son of Harvey Grant, nephew of Horace Grant and brother to current 76ers player Jerami Grant. I hope I don't need to tell you who Larry Nance Jr. is the son of. ;)

#296 Sam Dekker. Who, apparently, is going to be known mostly for the photo of him mowing the lawn shirtless that his mom posted on Twitter after the draft- it's what the text is about on the back of the card!

Speaking of, the backs of the cards are the same for both veterans and rookies. Unlike previous years of Panini's stewardship of Hoops, they don't include full stats, only going back to 2010-11 for veterans. That's disappointing, but not enough to change my enjoyment of the set.
The back is totally black and white, which makes it really easy to scan, something I appreciate. The text and name are huge, while the stats are tiny- I noticed after spending three days scanning these and nothing but these, they were actually starting to give me a headache, trying to read the tiny stats. They are easier to read in hand than in scan, which doesn't make any sense as the scan is larger. Go figure, right?

Now, let's move onto the parallels and inserts, beginning with the parallels.

First up, most common, is the Red Back. The front of the cards are the exact same as the base cards, but instead of being black and white, the backs are red and white. These really don't need to exist. Or at least make the foil on the card front red or something. Serially number them, or make them interesting...otherwise, meh. I pulled 4 of them from my box, and they are Hobby exclusive, I believe- this is the 3rd year they have done them, and the last two years were Hobby Exclusive, so I expect they are again this year.

I pulled three Gold parallels from the box. They are spectacular, but they don't scan well.
#281 Frank Kaminsky. They are really nice in person, the scan just does not do it justice. Yes, it's important enough to say twice. I am going to be chasing these gold cards for years. This was the only Kaminsky card I pulled.

The Silver parallels are serially numbered to 299, which is right center in the bottom of the picture. They are actually holofoil, but my scanner picks them up as white. They also look better in person.
I pulled two of these from my box. Oddly enough, I pulled Dwyane Wade's silver card from both 2014-15 and 2015-16 Hoops. I didn't do a hobby box of 2013-14 or earlier.

Serially numbered to 99, Artist Proof is the second-hardest parallel to pull, only to the Artist Proof Black which is 1/1, which I did not get. They are also on holofoil, and look pretty much just like the Silver with the exception of the gold foil Hoops 15-16 logo and Artist Proof stamp. It's hard to see, but this card is SN70/99. The / between the numbers is just barely on the stripe on his pants.

Also falling one per box, is the green parallel. These are really great- I can't decide if the Green or Gold is my favorite. These are 1-per-box, but I wish they were easier to get. I will be chasing these for years as well. Neither Green or Gold are serially numbered. Each of the square designs refracts light at a different pace, I guess would be the best way to describe it. Seeing these in person is so much better than scans.

Now, the inserts. New this year is that most of the inserts are printed on foil board. My scanner makes foil board light up and look white, but they are really nice looking in person.

I showed the Wiggins autograph above, but here is the Dawson one. There are two autographs per box, and also there is a parallel numbered to 25, which I did not pull this year- I pulled one last year.
As of right now, this and the SN25 Red Hot Signatures parallel are the only cards in existence for him.

Road to the Finals is a great insert. A 100 card set, every game of the Playoffs gets a card, and most of the Champion Warriors, including Steve Kerr, get a card. (Surprisingly, Festus Ezeli was totally ignored by the set- even the Champion subset of this insert!) I pulled 4 cards from this insert, including one of the second round cards which is SN999. The first round is SN2015, going down to the Finals cards which are SN99.
I actually pulled this one from my very first pack of the set. Zaza Pachulia, seen guarding Noah here, is not included in the set. He's now with the Mavericks.
This insert concept debuted last year and I really like it.

The hardest insert to find falls at one in every 480 packs, and that is Kobe's All-Rookie Team. I managed to pull one!
It happened to be my first card of Trey Lyles as well. In this card, the only holofoil is his name and the Hoops logo/team bar.
The Team Leaders subset highlights a player from each team who led that team in some statistical category.
I happened to pull an Artist Proof parallel as well, SN43/99. this came out of my second pack.
A cool new concept this year is the Triple-Double insert. Every single Triple-Double during the 2014-15 season gets a card, which leads to an unusual 46 card insert set. (Playoffs not included). I like the fact that they actually issued it to the team the player was with at the time, not where the player is now. Rondo was traded to the Mavericks during last season and now is a member of the Kings, but he put up his Triple Doubles as a member of the Celtics. Panini really did a good job with this insert- unfortunately, it's also one-per-box. This is also the only card in my collection showing the Celtics' sleeved alternate jersey, I believe.

Bird's Eye View moves from the apparently defunct Panini Flagship over to Hoops, and expands from 10 to 25 cards, all on holofoil. I really liked the Bird's Eye View insert in 2013-14 Panini, and I'm glad it's back. I pulled two of them.
Dreams is a 10-card insert showing Rookies. It is printed on holofoil, and once again, I pulled only one of them.
High Flyers is another holofoil insert and includes retired players as well as current players- obviously, as this image of Scottie Pippen dates to roughly 1997.
And finally, the one-per-pack Panini Dunk card. As I don't have a smart phone, these aren't too helpful to me. They were, however, the only duplicates, of which I am quite happy.

Overall, I rate this set very highly. I ended up with 262 of the 300 base cards, and I like the set enough that I will be chasing some retail versions of the set-hopefully I will be able to get some of the retail exclusive inserts and parallels, and finish off the base set. Relic cards are retail exclusive, aside from the Blue and Red parallels. Sometimes Panini makes the rookie cards less short printed in retail as well...time will tell. I am sure a future Hot off the Scanner Tray post will have some updates, unless I decide to give the eventual retail purchase it's own post.

My only real complaint is that so many players are ignored. If every team carried only 14 players, which is the norm- there are 420 players in the league at one time. If every team carried 15, as is the NBA allowed maximum, there are 450. For some reason Panini won't go over 300 which is very frustrating to me; there are players who have not gotten cards in years.
They are also hurting their bottom line, because if the set was larger with more players I would be willing to buy more than one box in the attempt to get said cards of other players. Just one set a year- the flagship, this one-should cover every player in the NBA. It's all I'm asking.
I have been trying to talk them into a series 2, but they ignore me. I'm not going to stop trying.

If you want to see all of the cards I got, I have an album created specifically for the box break on my Website.
