Completed 19 sets in one day! What's the longest you've chased a card?

I could have titled this COMC bonanza...June 22nd, 2016 is a date that is going to go down in history for me, as I completed 19 sets...and one 220 card parallel, which is just about the same as completing a major set!

I was gifted some money and instead of being a responsible adult, I put it all towards COMC's Spring Cleaning sale. The cards added to my collection will spawn several posts- some of them will even be combined with the last COMC order I made back at the start of May, the one I posted about titled "What dreams are made of". I'm getting backlogged here! But that's not a bad thing at all.

This post is JUST going to be about the cards that completed sets. It's my new personal record, and here's a collage of all 20 of them, counting the parallel, followed up by each card and some notes on each one.

This one makes me wonder, what's the longest time you've hunted one card?

For me, this one is it. When I created my paper listing in 1998, I already had all the other cards from this set. I have been actively chasing this one for 18+ years! Somebody on the Beckett forum once told me that they had it but wouldn't send it to me because it "wasn't worth the effort". (Any wonder I no longer post there?) The long hunt is finally over, and I finally got it!

1994-95 Topps Embossed #57
The first card out of the box completed 1992-93 Topps Archives. This is the first set where I completed a parallel before I completed the base set. I purchased the Factory set, which has a special gold foil logo, back in 1996. It was likely the first NBA set I ever completed, although it didn't count on my list of completed sets as it was a parallel. I had been 5 cards short on the base set for quite some time, then last year I traded for two on the Database, this year I traded for two more, and just broke down and bought this Ewing.
1992-93 Topps Archives #64
1987-88 Fleer was the second set of the "modern era" (I break it with the Star company sets) and I was one card short. This set also includes the earliest Michael Jordan card I'll ever be able to have. His Fleer card from 1986-87 and his Star cards (his TRUE RC!) are WELL out of my price range.
1987-88 Fleer #125
2010 Stealth was a nice set-every card is holofoil. I chased it extensively when it came out (in actuality, I got almost the entire set via one blaster box) and I came one card short. Buescher, who won a Truck championship just a couple of years ago, is out of the sport. I also got the third and final Salute to Dale insert card, which will appear in a near future post.
2010 Stealth #39
Honestly, I thought I had completed 2002-03 Topps a long time ago, but it turned out I was short one card.
2002-03 Topps #54
2005 VIP was a set I did a box of when new, but came up several cards short. I was able to trade for the others I needed but could not locate this one.
2005 VIP #44
2002 Stealth is another set I thought I had completed, but I was mistaken. It turned out that this was the only card I needed. I truly hate the censorship on many NASCAR sets, including every single Dale Earnhardt Jr. card produced between 2000-2007.
2002 Stealth #55
1993-94 Skybox is the second-largest set I completed that day, coming it at 341 cards. In truth, I already had the two cards I needed but they arrived to me badly damaged and it was the same as not having them.
1993-94 Skybox #182
2005 High Gear was a set I was two cards short on, and I got them both. The other card not shown was #80, a Jeff Gordon subset card. The High Gear brand is the only one where Press Pass bothered to include statistics, and when they killed it after 2008, there were no NASCAR sets that showed statistics, for the 2009-15 releases.
2005 Wheels High Gear #27
1988-89 Fleer is a set I've always liked (despite it's small size at 132 cards), mainly for two reasons- the green theme of the set (on the card backs) and when I was first getting into the NBA, they were some of the first older cards I got. While not particularly rare, the sets become much easier to find with the 1989-90 releases. I was three cards short, and I debated weather or not I wanted to finish this one- one of the cards missing was one of the most important from the set, the first Reggie Miller card. I am not a fan of Miller at all and only grudgingly spent the $6 on the card. But I did...
This is the only set in my lifetime to actually list the Knicks as "Knickerbockers", which is the proper name of the team. The only other sets to do that were 1948-49 Bowman and 1961-62 Fleer.
1988-89 Fleer #80
2002-03 Topps Chrome...this is a big one. The Chrome sets are tough, and in fact this is the first one I've completed, despite the fact that it had a run that lasted from 1996-97 through 2008-09. I was close, as I did TWO boxes when it was new, but I was short three cards. It's only a 175 card set, but it's still tough- of all the sets I've completed, this is the third hardest to complete, after 2002-03 SP Authentic (with all RC and SN subset!) and 1925 Lambert & Butler Motor Cars. There were 10 rookies in the set with versions in English and their native language, I was short two native versions and one English version, and I got them all. The 2003-04 Chrome set is one I could probably complete, as I was lucky enough to pull the big three rookies when the set was new (LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade). With those three down the rest shouldn't be too hard to track down. But for now I am going to just enjoy the fact that I completed a Topps Chrome set for the first time- the next to last major multi-year brand I had never completed any years from. Ironically, the last one left is Ultra, which is my favorite brand! (Post Preview edit: I have not completed any EX sets, either)
2002-03 Topps Chrome #165 B
1994 Maxx is the largest NASCAR set ever produced, at 340 cards. As I've stated numerous times, I like large sets...the larger the better. I had been one card short now since 2010 and I finally got it!
1994 Maxx #328
This was a frustrating set to complete, because I bought a box, and came up with a stack of duplicates about 40 cards high...but was missing 4 cards. I was able to trade for three of them, but this Waltrip eluded me. Even though 1993 is the year I began collecting NASCAR cards, this is only the 2nd set from the season I've completed, and I didn't complete the first until 2011!
1993 Maxx Premier Plus #30
2010 Premium is the set I was farthest away from at the start of this set-completing bonanza. I was 11 cards short, including 7 of the 10 short prints (Cards #91-100). I got them all. I don't know why but this set really struck me when it was new, I've been a fan since day 1. A large part of that is the fact that it's one of the few sets where Press Pass actually realized that you should show photos of cars in a NASCAR set!
2010 Premium #47

2010 Legends is a set that really made me very angry when it was new. More than half the set is made up of current drivers. I saved up to buy a box, (They sold for roughly $150) and my autographs were: Kurt Busch, Brandon Bernstein (both active, Bernstein is not even NASCAR!) and the only thing that saved it, the one card I wanted most out of the set, Ernie Irvan. Even so, I was so unhappy with this box, and set, that I basically walked away from NASCAR cards for a while, and concentrated solely on non-sports for the next year or so. Of course, it came back to kick me in the rear, because the 2011 Press Pass set is one of the few they actually got right, and by time I found that out they were off the retail shelves and hard to find.
I was two cards short, and I did not want to see this set at the top of my list of Sets Close to Completion, so I did it...even though one of the cards I was missing is of an active driver, not a legend. I did not buy another box of Legends after this, even though it was produced up through 2013.
2010 Legends #10
Bowman's Best was, I believe, the second Finest-style set, after Finest. It and Topps Chrome were both added to the NBA family in 1996-97, but my memory is telling me that Bowman's Best was released first. I didn't yet keep records of when I added cards to my collection and my Beckett collection is missing somewhere in storage, so my memory could be wrong. I completed the 1996-97 set when it was new (luckily, I was able to get the big rookies before they got really expensive [Kobe, Iverson, etc]) The 1997-98 set, which this one is, was 1 card short after a friend gifted me the other card I needed in January 2015, without knowing that I needed it!
1997-98 Bowman's Best #32
I also completed 1999-00 Bowman's Best from the same package! I was 4 cards short, so it was really just pure luck that the last one I needed that came out of the box was Elton Brand, my all-time favorite player!
1999-00 Bowman's Best #101
1997 Press Pass ActionVision was a concept I really liked, even if it does not translate well to scans. They were clear plastic cards, and when you turned them, the image would move. The set was only 12 cards, issued in single-card mini-boxes. I was 2 short, and got them both- plus the Bobby Labonte promo I didn't even know existed! I am going to try and take little movies of each of the cards but I don't know if it will work, and I don't want to hold the post off until I can find out, so for now just take my word for it that this image shows Dale Earnhardt's #3 car crossing the finish line to win a race at Daytona. At 12 cards, this is the smallest set I consider listing as an officially completed set. It was pack based, and it took me 19 years to complete it, so yes, for sure it counts. The technology used to make these cards was never used again, to my knowledge.
1997 Press Pass ActionVision #3
1995-96 Hoops is a very special set to me, as it was the 2nd NBA set to enter my collection. It's also the first NBA set I was conscious of having an insert from, and I consider the specific card to be my first NBA insert- even though I know it was in fact NOT, as 1995-96 Fleer included an insert in every pack. This set was also the first one I got a coach card from- Jim Lynam of the Bullets. I am a BIG proponent of coach cards. This is a 400 card set, the largest of those I completed on 6/22/16. I was 6 short. One of my long-term goals is to complete every base set of 1995-96 (well, to be honest, every year, but I'm talking realistically here) and this is one of the key sets to me.
1995-96 Hoops #120
While this one does not count on my official list of complete sets, it's still a major accomplishment. It's the 2009 Press Pass Blue set, which is 220 cards, and was issued one per retail pack of both series 1 and series 2. The 2009 set is the largest one Press Pass ever produced, and is available in 5 versions- silver foil, which is the base card (Completed in 2015), Red foil, which is Factory Set exclusive (Completed 2013), Gold foil, one per hobby pack (I have 56 of 220) and Holofoil, serially numbered to 100, of which I have 26 of 220, which is my personal best for any serially numbered parallel from any subject, not just NASCAR. If I eventually complete all 5 versions, that will be 1100 cards. With the 3 versions now completed, plus all the inserts, (and I have a lot of them!) this set is already the largest in my NASCAR collection with over 700 unique cards. I got roughly 90% of the blue parallels from the NUTS forum.
2009 Press Pass Blue #92
That's it from the sets I completed from this COMC bonanza. There will be at least two more posts in this series, probably more. And typing this one up gave me an idea for another topic to post, which will require me to do some actual thinking (gasp!) but it's something I've never really thought about before...stay tuned, because I will probably not post that one until sometime in July.

Thanks for reading!

NASCAR Encyclopedia: Steve Addington

Steve Addington is the second person alphabetically to receive a NASCAR card.

Steve Addington
Born: July 4th, 1964
Home: Spartanburg, South Carolina
Cards Produced, according to the Trading Card Database: 9
Cards in my collection: 1
NASCAR crew chief Career: 1993-current. Currently serves as Crew Chief for the #15 Cup team and driver Clint Bowyer. .

2009 Wheels Main Event #51
Steve Addington's first job as a crew chief came with Jason Keller and the #57 Busch team. They scored 10 wins between 1995 and 2003, before Addington joined Joe Gibbs Racing on the Cup series in 2004. Addington would find his greatest success with JGR, winning 16 of his 20 Cup wins as a crew chief with Kyle Busch between 2008 and 2011, including 8 in 2008, which was the league leading number of wins for that season. Addington then paired with Tony Stewart at Stewart-Haas Racing and scored four more wins with Stewart, before having a falling-out with the fiery owner-driver. Addington then moved to HScott Motorsports, a brand new team with rookie Justin Allgaier in 2014, and he remains with the team in 2016, with one-year only driver Clint Bowyer for this season. The HScott team has provided the largest challenge of Addington's career, as it operates on a shoestring budget compared to JGR and SHR, two of the most well-funded teams in NASCAR.

NBA 2015-16 Season in Review

The NBA season ended tonight, and I'm really not happy. I have had a lousy day to begin with and then saw the team with 3 of my 5 favorite players in the NBA get beaten at home after the best season in NBA history. While I generally like the city of Cleveland and the state of Ohio, and were they not facing the Warriors I would have been rooting for them, (I've been a Cavs fan since they wore the black and blue jerseys in the 1990s) but this leaves me with a bad feeling towards the NBA- game 7 the Cavs won fairly, (Game 3 as well) but game 5 and 6 were rigged- no question. Considering how much revenue a Finals game 7 brings in, I'm truly surprised we don't see that more often. Fouls were called on the Warriors when they breathed on the Cavs in those two games, yet the Cavs were allowed to travel at will. At least in the first half that is true- by the second half, the Cavs had such a huge lead that they generally stopped getting everything handed to them on a silver platter, but it was too late to make a difference. Let's put it this way- I remember seeing the Tim Donahy games. Remember the Ref who threw games for gambling? That's the guy, I may have spelled his name wrong. But the games HE refereed were more honest than the first halves of game 5 and 6. Granted, the Warriors couldn't hit a shot for most of the finals. One of the best shooting teams EVER suddenly stopped being able to nail a basket, even open ones. I don't get it. The worst part is they didn't even need the help, they simply played better down the stretch. Instead of winning by 15 points they probably would have won by 8 to 10 in those two games.

It really stinks that the season ended on such a farcial bad note, because overall 2015-16 was one of the most fun seasons I can recall in a good long while. I'm one of the few people who prefer the regular season over the playoffs- and I am very much looking forward to 2016-17. (I've known for years that the playoffs are manipulated to boost revenues, but this year was the worst.). Usually it doesn't bother me- my Nets are almost never in contention this late in the season so I usually don't care who wins, as long as I get to watch more basketball.

Not only that, but card wise it is the best of the Panini era, or at the very least tied with 2012-13. While Panini still doesn't truly get it- ignoring at least 150 players each season- the designs were better than they had been since 2012-13, and perhaps even better. The only set this year I didn't care too much for was Threads. I loved this year's Hoops set, the joke that they called Complete- 330 out of 450 people is NOT complete in any way, shape or form- the cards themselves, though, I loved. The Donruss design is one of my favorites from the Panini era, and I have not even posted about my best pull from the set yet. I managed to pull a patch from a blaster, only the second patch I've pulled from the Panini era. I pulled an autograph out of the very first set of the year, and it was one I would not have been able to afford as a single, (Andrew Wiggins) so that was a pleasant surprise.

One other thing worth noting, one of my favorite commercial series for the NBA took place this season, State Farm's "The Hoopers". I hope they bring it back next year.

I did something I have never done before, and that was keep track of the games I watched. I had to watch at least a full quarter for it to count (usually), and here are my grand totals, provided I didn't make any mistakes, which is very much possible as I sometimes got a little behind and had to scroll through the box scores on basketball-reference to see which ones I remembered.
  • 356 total games watched
  • 252 regular season
  • 71 playoffs
  • 23 Pre-Season
  • 7 D-League
  • 3 All-Star (Plus the non-game stuff like the Slam Dunk competition, which is not counted)
I watched more than I thought I would to be honest, and if my TV didn't act up sometimes I would have watched some more. Probably would have increased 10 or so games.

I plan to keep the chart for the 2016-17 season as well, and this year I will attempt to include Summer League games, which I didn't have the idea of making the Excel chart until the 2015-16 Summer Leagues were already over, so that information was lost.

I've already gotten a few cards that mention games I watched. In the past I usually was left wondering if it was a game I saw or not, when a specific one was mentioned. Now, I will know. I just got one this week, in fact my very first card out of my very first pack of Excalibur, #147 Anthony Davis, references a game I saw. I would probably not have remembered that otherwise. That sort of thing tends to all blur together in my head- I tend to remember if I ever saw a player play, not specific games.

As I will watch any team, at any time, (something I can do because my mom gets me League Pass as a birthday present every year) all 30 NBA teams appear multiple times on my chart. I don't know of a way to figure out exactly which teams I watched how many times, but I know the Warriors are the team I watched the most. Second would be probably the New York Knicks or Philadelphia 76ers, once they signed Elton in January. After that would probably be the Nets, and beyond that, I have no clue. I watch them all.

I think my favorite game that I watched this year was Kobe's final game where he scored 60. The Lakers have never been my favorite team, nor Kobe my favorite player, but that was just incredible to watch. It's the end of an era that is a little hard to fathom- the 1996-97 rookie class is the first one I truly got to experience so it has a special place in my memories. Kobe was the best player in the League for most of the past 20 years, until the injuries set in, and to see him get 60 in his final game was something truly special. It's not diminished in my eyes that the Jazz, who knew they would not make the playoffs, didn't really play defense and that most of the other Lakers made sure to funnel the ball to Kobe. That to me is a sign of respect, actually, one final moment in a career filled with incredible moments.

I know this is a really negative post, not the kind I usually make, but I am really an unhappy person (I hide it well) but I can't hide it tonight. I can't be the NBA-does-no-wrong guy that I usually am tonight. I even set aside the NBA cards and worked on hockey cards tonight.

With that said, the 2016-17 season truly gets under way this coming Thursday, when the NBA Draft takes place. I always enjoy the Draft, seeing all the new names entering the league and, hopefully, my card collection. The Summer League kicks off July 2nd so that's really not all that far away- it'll be here before too long, and then there's the Olympics. I LOVE the Olympics and will watch as much of them as I possibly can. (There will be several Olympic-themed posts in the not too distant future)

I can't wait.

Now, here's a look at all of the 2015-16 sets in my collection. I don't have Clear Vision yet and don't know when it will make it's way to my collection- I'm mostly done buying cards for a while, but that's a whole other topic.

What dreams are made of

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I came literally 5 minutes away from dying. I got out of the hospital on April 30th but I consider May 1st the first day of the beginning of my new life- I was so tired I pretty much just fell asleep after watching a movie with my brother on the 30th- I really didn't do anything.

So every May 1st my family celebrates the fact that I am still here. This year's celebration they went all out...and I accomplished something I only dreamed of doing.

One thing is that my brother got me a smart phone. I've been happy with my "stupid phone" but he got a new smart phone last month and I loved it. I decided within a matter of minutes after looking at his that I wanted one so he got me one. I mostly use it for games- Simpsons Tapped Out is my favorite. It's also going to help me with my collection as I'm going to be creating a new page on the top of my blog here, that will be a list of the card numbers I need from sets. I am in the middle of a couple of other projects so I have not started yet, but it will be much easier when I am out to pull that up and look at the list than try and go through each set on the Database.

The gift my mom gave me is what this blog post is about.

I opened up the card she gave me and saw this hand-made sign...WOW! I was pretty well stunned- for me this is a lot of money to spend on cards. I took a few hours to think about what I wanted to do, then I decided that I was going to try and get each of the missing sets from my collection- something I've always dreamed of doing, but never had the money available to do.

There were 48 sets missing from my NBA collection, and two from NASCAR, one of which was promo/factory set only so it doesn't really count as essential to be complete.

This has been my main goal, to have at least one card from every set ever made in my collection. In my first go-round with the NBA (1996-2006) I had accomplished it, I thought, but I found two sets I missed totally from 2005-06 once I got on the Database. One of the reasons I walked away for a while was because I was frustrated with the super-expensive sets that killed my project of having every set represented in my collection; I knew I lost it in 2006-07 and later in that season I walked away, which I now regret immensely.

For NASCAR, I had NEVER gotten it where I had every set, even though I have been collecting NASCAR non-stop since 1993. I got most of them but there were a few expensive sets I missed.

The list of missing sets included some that were pretty darn expensive when they were new. Panini's Flawless sells for $1200 a box, Upper Deck's Exquisite Collection sold for $500 a box. There were multiple years of each set missing, they are just too pricey for me. But maybe I could get a single card...

I DID IT!  Every Missing set, real set, non-promo....This completes a project I've been dreaming about doing since the 1990s; I don't remember exactly when this concept hit me, but it's been something I've been working on for as long as I can remember!
Here is a screencap of my chart of missing sets as of 5/1/2016. Look at it now, and it is significantly smaller. It's not totally empty- 1996 Maxx Premier Series still eludes me for NASCAR, but it was a promo set and only issued in factory set form- so while it's something I want to have in my collection, it's not a necessity to consider my collection complete. Panini's Eminence for the NBA is still there. How I loathe this set. The box sold for $6000- yes, that is correct, NOT a typo. Each card in the set is numbered to 10 or less. The cheapest one on COMC was $150 for one card. I can't do that. I won't do that. However...I'm not totally sure the set should be counted for the NBA. There were a lot of baseball people included in the cut signature insert- far more than NBA people in fact. That checklist also included non-sports people and possibly athletes from other sports as well. I have not decided if that makes the set a multi-sport set or not...I can't decide, but I kind of hope that it is, so I can ignore it and not have it on my list of missing sets.
Now, here are scans of the card fronts each of the missing sets. I was able to get all of them and then some, which will lead to another post in the very near future.

What I did was get the cheapest card available for each set. Most of them were pretty cheap, but a couple of them were more expensive. I think the highest I paid for any of them was $10. There were a couple of instances where I didn't get the cheapest- there was one set where for literally 3 cents more I could get Elton Brand, so I did, and there were a couple where for a nickel or so I could get a person not in my collection, so I did that too.

I really wanted to get this post up a lot sooner, but I was sick for most of the month of May and I was also working on the foils and finests before the scanner got too scuzzy to use. I finally finished scanning all the cards on June 17th, the day of posting! A large portion of the post was written back in early May.
