Cards Every Day: January 2016

While I was able to successfully pull off the Card of the Day project in 2018...it wasn't the first time I attempted that project. May 2002 was the first time I had ever gotten a new card every day of the month, and I did it again in September-December 2010 when I bought 4 cheap hobby boxes and a not-as-cheap factory set and pulled one card from each set every day from when I got them until January 1st 2011. In this post I mentioned doing it in December 2015, which I don't remember anymore.  I actually tried to do the project in 2016, not to celebrate any special anniversary, just because I thought it would be fun. The project failed in February that year, but taught me some very valuable lessons that helped me make sure that the project would succeed in 2018. I wrote up the post for January and as far as I got into February back in 2016, but never published them. They have been sitting in my queue for years now, and now that I have finished the 2018 Card of the Day project,  I decided to finally show them the light of the day. You'll find some things are different in the 2016 post than the completed 2018 post. For one, the name of the project was different, I wasn't collecting hockey, and I only had my Canon scanner- which didn't pull as good scans as the Epson I purchased in spring 2016. Everything not in yellow was written in 2016... the same box of cards that gave me the December 30th, 2018 card gave up the Topps 1000 Yard Club insert and the 1991 Leaf card in this post! The 4th, 14th and 18th cards in this post came from the same store collated repack I saved but couldn't find for the 31st of December, 2018! As an aside, my 2018 Card of the Day list won Best List on the Trading Card Database awards!

I've done it before...but never on this level. In 2016, I am going to attempt my most daunting project ever....to try and get at least one new card every day of the year. 366 new cards. It doesn't sound that bad when you think of it that way, but it's going to be a huge challenge.

I am more worried about forgetting it than actually finding a new card to add to the collection, because I have a plan to make that very easy. My memory isn't great, which is why I take notes on everything, and one of the reasons I started the blog- to get my memories down on, well, not paper, but if I can go back and read them in the future I don't need to worry about forgetting. I'm also afraid that it may make getting new cards a chore instead of a hobby, which is definitely something I don't want to happen.

My plan for making sure I get something new every day? That's actually pretty simple. I'm going to get a mixed box of the other sports, that I don't normally collect - that's baseball, football and hockey- and pull a card out of there to get my new one for the day. Of course, that will also be mixed in with NBA, NASCAR and non-sports that I normally do collect. I have literally no idea what will be added to my collection in this experiment, but I'm looking forward to finding out. As an added bonus I might be able to contribute something out of the ordinary to the Database that way as well.

On days when I get more than one card, the first card added that day will be the one shown on this rundown.

Sunday, January 31st, 2016- 2005-06 Upper Deck Sweet Shot #14

Overall, January was a success, and for the first time ever I've done two consecutive months where I got at least one new card a day. I actually got less cards in January than I did in most of the months of 2015, but that's OK. I appreciate every card I get, and I'm happy to have anything/everything I get. I have only a limited stash of cards I've never been through on hand, and while I have enough to get me through several months, I am limiting myself to one or two cards a day- or sometimes a pack- so I can make sure they last me a while. Some of the stash I've gone has been waiting for me to get to since 2013, including one card in the month- I had one pack left of the 1999 Wheels High Gear box I got for Christmas 2013. I only pulled one card out of it so it will likely appear in a future post as well.

Never did I feel like it was a chore and not something exciting, and I didn't forget any days so that is a very good thing. Interestingly, several cards in the month I wasn't expecting to get- they were used as padding in other transactions.

Normally I plan to post each month's Cards Every Day on the last day of the month, but at the end of January I was right in the middle of my NBA 20th Anniversary Countdown so instead I'm posting it now.

The next post I publish will be the February 2016 entry, where the project failed.

  1. Some serious Elton Brand patches in there... but Boo trumps all 3 of those ;)

  2. Always been a fan of those 1000 Yard Club cards. That Kyle Lowry card is a nice looking card. Lights Camera Action Inserts are my favorite from that set. Great cards.
