I was born in 1984. I've been a basketball fan since 1996. I've never seen my home team win a championship...until now!
The New York Liberty brought home the 2024 WNBA Championship, bringing the city and state of New York the first major basketball title since the Nets won the final ABA Championship in 1976.
The hard-fought finals against the Minnesota Lynx was honestly the most invested I've been in a basketball series since the Nets made the NBA finals in 2003. Game 5 was played on my birthday, and the refereeing was awful- the Lynx best players were in the proverbial stripes.
Back home for game 6 was a nail biter, but my team won! New York is the champion!
I had to get some of the Panini Instant cards documenting this.
This is from Game 4, and the first time I thought to check Instant.
Some cool cards, a lot cooler than the ones Topps made for the Dodgers' title. ... Breanna Stewart grew up an hour south of me and I still find that bizarre.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that they even made cards for the last NHL Champions, although I may have just skipped them because I'm not too fond of Florida.
DeleteAs an aside, you mentioned that you're having trouble commenting on some blogs. I currently can't comment on yours, it's saying "encountered a problem please try again later"
Very cool. Love that card companies are celebrating women's sports more and more with each passing year. Congratulations to all of the Liberty fans out there. I don't really follow the WNBA, but I'm actually familiar with two of the three ladies featured on the solo cards.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed, I have been hoping for some PWHL cards as well. I know they make women's Soccer cards because I've been keeping my eyes open for one of Trinity Rodman, since I like to get at least one card of people in other sports with connections to the sports I collect, but they are too expensive for me for that purpose. I was looking in the dollar and under range and couldn't find a single one.
DeleteI haven't watched the liberty since the Lobo days, but was excited to finally see a championship win!
ReplyDeleteI watch much more now than I did then. I didn't start watching the WNBA regularly until 2012.
