Sets in my Collection #17: 1938 Wilbur-Suchard Flags

This is a set that today would be very, very difficult to complete. A 29 card set, 28 of them were regularly available, but the 29th was available only as a mail in, and to find that card would likely be near impossible...and it's not like any sets from the 1930s are common, to begin with!

I had never heard of this set or even company until I found the two cards now in my collection, and neither are in perfect shape, with one much worse than the other.

At one time in the world of cards, flags were a popular subject to make into cards, but they have not had a set in decades now, even in the 1990s there was no set specifically devoted to flags that I am aware of, although they did make up nearly half the stickers in the 1991 Topps Desert Storm set.

These are small, thick cards. The scans shown here are roughly double the actual size. Since I have only two of them I am posting both.

This is not a bad scan, the back really is crooked. All the backs in the set are the same.

By the way, the rare 29th flag was the USA.

  1. Cool stuff...but you have to give up the names and addresses of four people to get the last card?

    1. Early spamming people! It was actually fairly common at least through WWII based on comic book ads.

  2. It really is a shame that companies don't produce cards like this anymore.
