PPPP: Introducing the Pack-Pulled Parallel Project

I really love parallels. Probably more than most people in the hobby, based on all the constant complaining I see about them.
Me,  though....I love them! I always have. I suspect I always will. I don't really care about inserts, but show me a parallel and THAT I care about greatly. If they are SN, then all the better!

So, I was thinking about it a few nights ago and I said to myself: "How hard would it be to get an example of every pack-issued parallel in one of my sports?" My thoughts quickly turned to NASCAR, because of two reasons- one being that is where I was first introduced to parallels, back in 1993, and two being that I had a far greater percentage already in my collection than I did for the NBA or the NHL, where there are still plenty of flagship sets missing, let alone parallels.

I furthered narrowed it down to pack issued, because for many years Press Pass would issue ebay Previews, SN to only 5 copies, that are pretty much unobtainable to me. IF you can find them for sale, they tend to go for more than I will spend on a single card. I have exactly one in my collection, which was a gift from a friend. That also lets out some National Convention parallels, which were usually 1/1s. Also, it allowed me to come up with a catchy acronym!

On the topic of 1/1s...there are a lot of those sets around. They are pricey for me. I'm going to put them on the list of missing parallels, but sequestered in their own section. I will consider the project a success if I can get all the other sets except the 1/1s. As I type this, I have 4 1/1s in my NASCAR collection, two of which are printing plates.

A brief history of parallels in NASCAR:

They began in 1993. Action Packed, Traks, Finish Line and Wheels Rookie Thunder, all had parallels in 1993. Action Packed's are the rarest, as they are 24kt. Gold parallels. Finish Line, Traks and Rookie Thunder had them seeded 1-per-pack, just the way I like it. I have examples of all of them in my collection.

1994 saw what I call Level 2 Parallels debut in Wheels High Gear. A Level 2 parallel is also a parallel to the base set, but rarer than the easiest to find parallel. How it works is Base→Day 1→Gold→Day 1 Gold. I class the Day 1 and the Gold are both standard parallels, but Day 1 Gold is a level 2 parallel, because it's a parallel of a parallel. Sounds confusing, but it's not really, at least to me, because I've been thinking in these terms since I was 10 years old in 1994.

1996 saw the debut of Serial Numbered parallels, in Press Pass's Premium and VIP brands. It would be a few years before I actually got any, but SN cards, and parallels in particular, have become a major addiction for me.

In 1997, Printing Plates were inserted into Pinnacle products, marking the first 1/1s in NASCAR history.

Cards needed for the project:
These are the parallels missing from my collection. It doesn't matter to me which card I get, or even what condition it's in. As long as I have an example of the set, I'm happy. When I buy cards for this sort of project, I usually just select the cheapest one available, regardless of who it is a card of. I'm trying to not spend money on cards right now (see why here) so I'm hoping to trade for what is missing. If the cards are serially numbered, I notate that in the listing.

That's not as bad as I was expecting. 126 non-1/1s. I'm not listing the 2018 sets as I have not really opened them yet- only 4 packs of Donruss and none of anything else. If I can get the non-1/1 parallels under 100 needed by the end of 2018 I will be happy. I don't expect to ever actually complete this, but it will be a good project to work on over the coming years.I got $20 from COMC for shipping 400 cards in July, I am going to see if I can get any of these on there...I have already picked up, but not shipped, the ones crossed out and labeled Pending.
