2018 Card of the Day: February (Corrected!)

Sorry for the delay in getting this posted...I thought that I had scanned all of the cards I needed to for the post, but it turns out I missed one...and of course, I discovered this in the middle of an Excel-typing project, which I had to finish first to make sure I didn't make any mistakes.

If you don't recall, during 2018 I am trying to get at least one new card every day of the year to celebrate my 30th year in the hobby. So far, so good, as I've gotten two months in (and then some, as it's already March 4th as I am writing this) without missing a beat. Without further talking, here's some cards!
2003-04 Bowman Signature #105
February 1st.  Pulled this one out of the COMC box, a set I'm working on, as I've written about before.
2013 Goodwin Champions #11
February 2nd, from a pack I had been saving.
1956 Topps Jets #37
February 3rd, This one actually came from a Facebook group purchase, not something that I do all that often.
2017-18 Panini Stickers #276
February 4th. This came from a pack I purchased that day at Target.
2016-17 SPx Rookie Jersey
February 5th. From the COMC box. I chose the thickest card (looking only at the sides) to pull out this day, I wanted a pick me up as it's the anniversary of when I lost my dad.
2003-04 Topps Chrome #29
February 6th, from COMC. Another set I'm working on.
2008-09 Upper Deck First Edition Starquest #SQ-14
February 7th, from a surprise box from Jon @ A Penny Sleeve for your Thoughts.
1983 Topps Greatest Olympians #36
February 8th, As you all know by now I'm a HUGE Olympic fan, and this one coincides with the opening of the games. I purchased a hand collated set in 2015 and I've been parting it out during the Olympics only. I expect to finish it during the 2022 games...maybe later.
2014-15 Panini Stickers #388
February 9th, a surprise gift from a Trading Card Database member. Love team cards!
1990 Topps #69
February 10th, from Jon. He must have remembered seeing me comment that the 1990 Topps baseball set design is one of my favorites, because he sent me quite a few of them. I have some that Mark Hoyle sent me as well that I had saved for this project but can't remember where I put them, so I'm glad to be able to get some in.
1976-77 Topps #200
February 11th, from the vintage hockey lot I picked up in January.
2015-16 Panini Excalibur #58
February 12th. From a pack I found at Target on the 4th, and saved.
1983 Topps Greatest Olympians #37
February 13th. Jim Thorpe is widely considered one of the greatest athletes to ever live, and this is my first card of him.
2017-18 Panini Stickers #110
February 14th is the anniversary of when I discovered the NBA, so if I realize what day it is I try to get some NBA cards that day every year. Doing this project meant I knew for sure what day it was and opened a pack.
2010 PRess Pass Blue #101
February 15th. Excited for the start of the NASCAR season, I opened a pack from my stash...and got this parallel of one of my all-time least favorite drivers.
1983 Topps Greatest Olympians #65
February 16th. From the set. You're going to see it a few more times during the month.
1954 Topps Scoop #51
February 17th. A gift from Mom. Was supposed to be a Valentine's Day present but due to major storms in the midwest it didn't get here in time.
2017 Absolute Racing Absolute Memorabilia #AM-AJ
February 18th, from a blaster I had saved to open up during the Daytona 500. I posted the pack on A Pack to be Named Later.
1983 Topps Greatest Olympians #63
February 19th. I wish they had used an Olympic photo instead of a college one.
2009-10 Artifacts #60
February 20th, from a store-collated repack I purchased in Lake George in September and saved.
1983 Topps Greatest Olympians #56
February 21st.
2002-03 Finite #93
February 22nd, from the COMC box.
February 23rd, from the same set.
.
1993-94 Finest Refractor #37
February 24th, from a very rare purchase on the Collector's Universe forum. I've been a member there since 2008 and I believe this was the first time I have purchased cards on there.
2012 Topps US Olympic Team & Hopefuls Silver #77
February 25th. The last day of the Olympics. I purchased a pack of this set when it was still on the shelves and saved it all this time, I actually had one I had saved for the 2016 games as well.
2018 Topps Throwback Thursday #31
February 26th. This one came directly from Topps. Unfortunately it arrived right after the Olympics ended. The images in this six card set are not from this year's Olympics- one of the athletes had even retired a year ago.
2015-16 Upper Deck Portfolio #74
February 27th, from a pack out of the same box that gave me that Wayne Gretzky SN2 patch.
2004 Optima Q&A #QA4
February 28th, from a pack my mom found at the local dollar store earlier in 2018...pretty amazing considering that store didn't even exist in 2003! It was the only card in the pack I needed.

And that's all for this short month.

  1. Realized reading this I accidentally removed the 23rd. I'm not at my computer right now but I will edit it in tonight or tomorrow, and the one word I missed, as soon as I can. It's another card from the 1983 Olympics set.

  2. Lots of great stuff here. My favorites would be the logo stickers, Dryden, Baron Davis, and Lindsey Vonn. I didnt know Topps had TBT Olympic cards. I'll have to see who else they featured.

The 93-94 Finest basketball set was a rare (and expensive) treat when I was a young collector. My LCS had packs/boxes priced sky high; I could only afford a few commons at the time.

    1. You can check them out here if you want to: http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewAllSet.cfm/sid/165942/2018-Topps-Throwback-Thursday (Sorry, can't remember how to post a link in a comment, so you'll have to copy and paste). They were numbered as part of the baseball set, unfortunately. When they did the Star Wars set a year or so ago it got it's own numbering, which suits me better. I have all the scans posted, of course. 344 sets were printed, which is the lowest of the year so far.

Same with me for 1993-94 Finest. Although I didn't discover the NBA until 1995-96 season, the 1993-94 Finests have long been a gaping hole in my collection. Of all the pre-2005 main sets (not counting the super vintage like 1948-49 Bowman and the crazy $500 for 5 card packs) it's still the one I have the least of.

  3. Nice collection of cards. Sean Elliott looks a little green.

    1. A common problem with early Finest cards, unfortunately. You should see the Scott Skiles that I also got...he looks like Mr. Burns when he "brings you peace". I'm going to get a post out of it at some point, I suspect.

  4. Love the 1983 Topps Greatest Olympians set design. Kinda makes me want to go out and buy a set.

    1. They aren't particularly expensive if you choose to...this whole set cost me only $5. I am still looking for the 1984 reissue, which has the Olympic Rings in the top rectangle.
