Panini REALLY wants you to know which parallel you have

I see a lot of people complaining that they can't tell which parallel they have. (Personally, that's an issue I've only had once but it was in a set that was issued for a sport I didn't begin to collect until 20 years after issue) but I'm a BIG fan of parallels so maybe I'm just more pre-disposed to them or something.

Panini wants to make sure that's not going to be something that you can say about the new Donruss Optic set.

Gee, might this be the Checkerboard parallel? I don't know...

In hand, you can faintly see the lettering below the "stamp". It's not really a stamp, it's part of the card design, I just can't think of a better thing to call it.

It is actually my first card of Sterling Brown.
He's the front. Neat looking card. Looks even better in hand. I got my second card of him the same day- the Mega Box Rated Rookie Shock promo/parallel.

I still have most of my blaster of Optic waiting to be opened, maybe I will pull the base card at some point.

  1. Looks like a checkerboard to me, must be the checkerboard parallel. Checks back. Yup, it's definitely the checkerboard

  2. Is that a sticker you peel off or is that stamped on there?

    1. Part of the card...the main focus for the back,I would say!

  3. Here I thought it was called the Cartoon Network logo parallel.

  4. This is a bit much. They were more subtle on the Presitge parallels

    1. Indeed. I didn't even see the tiny "Rain" printed on my first one until I scanned it.

  5. Haha. I was just thinking that Topps should put "variation" on the backs in text like they do with the word "refractor" but this is amazing. I've seen this on the Aqueous Test parallels, but that made sense since I think the originals had the same thing (not 100%).

    1. That would be much better than having to check that tiny little code!

  6. That does seem a bit unnecessary; I thought the same thing while doing COMC challenges and Aqueous Test parallels came up. Too loud, Panini!

I hope you show us more of your Optic blaster; I bet the cards look a lot better with logos (I've only seen the bland baseball version)

  7. I am not a fan of the parade of parallels that has become common place in modern sets, but at least marking it clearly like that is nice. It is just irritating trying to figure out certain parallels when you have a set that has parallels like blue, sky blue, blue mojo or whatever other shade of blue.

    1. I actually like parallels more than inserts...I know I am one of the few.

  8. Such extremes. Topps has these tiny little codes that are making me go blind. Panini is on the opposite end of the spectrum with this obnoxious label. Not sure which one I prefer... but I will say that I'm not a fan of either.

    1. I'm pretty much blind so the bigger is better for me!

  9. I love these....It feels like someone at Panini has been reading all the bitching about crazy Topps parallels. He then runs into a design meeting and says "what if we put the type of parallel in big bold letters across the whole back." We'll get all the Topps customers!!!!
